The National Park Service (NPS) is looking for temporary employees to work on Great Smoky Wildland Fire Module (WFM) in Gatlinburg, TN (Great Smoky Mountains NP). For more information on Crew Types, click here. The anticipated start date may be late October 2025.
A Wildland Firefighter (GW/GS-05) is a trained and experienced wildland firefighter performing all aspects of wildland and prescribed fire operations including preparation, ignition, monitoring, holding, and mop-up. Gathers and considers information on weather data, topography, fuel types, and fire behavior in responding to wildland fire incidents. May be required to operate light vehicles and 4X4s. To qualify for a GW-05, you must meet at least one of the following: one year of specialized work experience equivalent to the GW/GS-04 level duties, 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree, from an accredited college or university, or a combination of education and specialized work experience. Physical demands include arduous exertion for protracted periods of time such as extensive running, walking, climbing, kneeling, stooping, pulling hoses, jumping and twisting, prolonged standing, walking over uneven ground, and recurring bending, reaching, lifting and carrying of items weighing over 50 pounds and shared lifting and carrying of heavier items. Work environment includes forest, range, and desert environments in steep terrain where surfaces may be extremely uneven, rocky, covered with thick tangled vegetation, smoky conditions, etc.
Proof of education must be submitted. To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution. Foreign education must be evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs.
