Job Description

*Job Title:* Staff Attorney
*Organization:* Next Step Domestic Violence Project
*Location:* Serving Hancock and Washington Counties, Maine

*Reports to:* Executive Director
*Salary:* $80,000.00 plus benefits and mileage reimbursement
*Benefits:* Full benefits package including dental, life insurance, paid vacation, and sick leave (accrual begins on start date)

*Position Overview:*

Next Step Domestic Violence Project is seeking a *Staff Attorney* to provide holistic, trauma-informed legal services to survivors of domestic and dating violence, stalking, and harassment. The attorney will offer consultation and direct representation to clients across a range of civil legal matters related to personal safety and long-term economic stability.

*Key Responsibilities:*

* Provide legal consultation and representation for survivors, with a focus on:
* *Protection from Abuse (PFA) Orders*
* *Divorce*
* *Parental Rights and Responsibilities*
* *Other civil legal matters related to safety and economic security*
* Work collaboratively with Next Step’s legal team to assess and determine the most appropriate legal services for each client
* Maintain client records and compile data for grant reporting and program evaluation
* Participate in team meetings, legal strategy sessions, and case reviews
* Stay current with best practices in trauma-informed legal services for domestic violence survivors
* Maintain Maine State Bar License and complete all required Continuing Legal Education (CLE) courses
* Successfully complete Next Step’s Core Advocacy Training and other specialized training relevant to legal advocacy in the context of domestic violence

*Qualifications:*

* Current license to practice law in the state of Maine (in good standing)
* Strong understanding of the dynamics of domestic violence, dating violence, stalking, and harassment
* Commitment to trauma-informed, survivor-centered advocacy
* Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a legal team
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills
* Familiarity with the legal needs of survivors in rural communities is a plus
