The Stowers Institute for Medical Research has an opening for a full-time Research Technician in the Aquatic Invertebrate Facility. This person will be responsible for competently providing routine basic animal care and husbandry for invertebrate species.
Responsibilities include:
- Life Support system checks
- Health checks and census
- Animal feeding
- Water exchanges
- Water quality testing
- Equipment maintenance and cleaning
- Sterilization of equipment
- Facility maintenance
- Hiring input
- Review, comprehend, and comply with all Standard Operating Procedures (i.e., SOPs). Seek proper training for tasks and always ask questions in the event of confusion, or doubt, as to the proper procedure.
- Monitor animal health and welfare while performing daily animal health observations and animal husbandry duties to maintain quality and health of research animals.
- Proactively plan and organize daily activities and work orders with a minimum amount of supervision. Follow the posted team schedule and utilize time in most efficient manner.
- Communicate effectively with management, teammates, and other colleagues via digital channels and actively participate in team meetings.
- Use effective oral/written communication to maintain a positive collaborative working relationship with lab members; this may involve but is not limited to attending Pre-Project Planning Meetings, lab meetings, and/or User Group Meetings.
- Maintain accurate records in software, logs, and databases for all work performed.
- Ensure proper equipment/instrument/life support system operation. Communicate issues with management and place tickets as required.
- Maintain required attendance level and adhere to work schedule in accordance with required staffing levels to ensure that assigned duties are completed. Weekend on-call rotation is required as well as active participation in holiday coverage and on-call sign-ups.
- Operate all equipment and use supplies and chemicals according to safety guidelines; perform general housekeeping and adhere to safety procedures.
- Report any accidents, deviations from procedures, or general facility concerns to manager.
- Assist in support areas as assigned by the manager and perform other duties as they are assigned.
Prior experience with aquatic animals and a basic understanding of system maintenance relating to various types of aquaculture systems is preferred. Weekend and Holiday work will be required.
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in any of the life sciences (e.g., animal science, biology, microbiology, aquaculture).
- Basic computer skills and a working knowledge of computer programs including Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word.
- Self-motivation, excellent communication and organizational skills, and the ability to work closely with other team members.
