Position Description
The Head of Nutrition will be an integral part of U.S. Soccers High-Performance Department, working closely with sports science and sports medicine teams to plan and deliver evidence-based nutrition services for Youth, Extended, and Senior National Teams. Responsibilities include developing and coordinating nutritional services for individuals and teams.
Primary Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary performance nutrition contact for National Team athletes, collaborating with performance and medical staff, team administrators, and external personnel.
- Develop and implement individualized and team-based nutrition programs, including education, counseling, and dietary planning.
- Oversee assessments and protocols related to body composition, hydration, and recovery nutrition.
- Manage dining initiatives, menu planning, and coordination with food service providers.
- Design sports-specific menus and fueling strategies for training, competition, and travel.
- Provide nutrition support during training, competitions, and major tournaments, including travel.
- Research and educate athletes on dietary supplements, ensuring compliance with policies from U.S. Soccer, CONCACAF, FIFA, WADA, and USADA.
- Oversee budgeting, inventory, and administration of nutrition services.
- Contribute to research, policy development, and anti-doping initiatives, supporting athlete and staff education.
- Represent U.S. Soccer at national and international conferences.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
- Masters degree in clinical nutrition, exercise science, or a related field.
- Registered Dietitian (RD) with active status through the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
- Licensure as required by the State of Georgia.
- At least five years of experience in intercollegiate athletics or professional sport.
- Expertise in clinical and sports nutrition, including assessments and managing disordered eating.
- Knowledge of dietary supplements, ergogenic aids, and compliance with relevant regulations.
- Experience with food service quality and safety, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong communication skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and perform physical tasks as required.
- Willingness to travel up to 30% and work non-traditional hours.
- Basic knowledge of soccer.
- Ability to connect detailed micro-level data with macro-level vision and mission.
Desired Qualifications
- PhD in sports nutrition, physiology, or related field.
- ISAK Level 1 Anthropometrist certification.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish.
- Previous experience with professional or national teams.
- Deep understanding of U.S. Soccers mission, policies, and procedures.
