Job Description

Firefighter (Paramedic)

This announcement uses the Defense Industrial Base, major Range and Test Facilities Direct Hire Authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to certain positions in the competitive service. The Secretary of Defense has ordered a department-wide hiring freeze subject to certain limited exceptions. This position is subject to the DoD hiring freeze. Duties

  • Serve as a fully trained member of a firefighting crew engaged in the protection of life and property.
  • Respond to alarms and combats fire in an industrial setting requiring the full performance of a firefighting tasks involving structures, equipment, and facilities. Alternates as a firefighter and driver operator.
  • Test firefighting apparatus, hydrants, hoses annually and following maintenance.
  • Serve as a driver-operator of major motorized firefighting equipment, exercising a thorough knowledge of equipment capabilities and physical characteristics.
  • Drive firefighting equipment to and from the scene of emergencies.
  • Operate all equipment connected with an apparatus in accomplishing rescue and fighting fires. Completes training to remain proficient in firefighting and driver operator operations.
  • Respond to accidents and other emergencies involving injury, illnesses, hazardous environments, and other unknowns.
  • Upon arrival determines scene safety, makes a preliminary assessment of the patient's condition and selects from a variety of prescribed Advanced Life Support Protocols, which is appropriate under the given circumstances.
  • Provide treatment as prescribed in protocol, modifies the protocol, as necessary, within prescribed limits.
  • Conduct a complete examination of the patient to determine the nature, extent, and seriousness of their condition and searches for medical alert symbols.
  • Determine with regard to the patient's condition, if and how they can be moved or removed from the present danger.
  • Prioritizes treatment for patients having multiple problems and employs a variety of established emergency medicine techniques, methods, and equipment to intervene on the patient's behalf.

Requirements

Must be a US citizen. Must be determined suitable for federal employment. Must participate in the direct deposit pay program. New employees to the Department of the Navy will be required to successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check. Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326. Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service. Possession of a valid State of California Paramedic License or National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians Paramedic certification is required prior to employment. The incumbent must obtain and maintain a valid California Paramedic License and Inland Counties Emergency Medical Agency (ICEMA) accreditation within sixty (60) days of appointment. This is a Mission Essential (ME) position. In the event of a crisis situation, the incumbent must continue to perform the ME duties until relieved by proper authority. This position requires participation in the DoD Firefighter Physical Fitness Program to include a physical exercise program and annual physical examination. Must possess and maintain a valid state Driver's License. This position requires the incumbent to work 144 hours bi-weekly. Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or pass the test. You will be subject to random testing.

Qualifications

GS-08: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Serves as a firefighter-paramedic who works to control and extinguish fires, rescue persons endangered by fire, and reduce or eliminate potential fire hazards. GS-09: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-08 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Serves as a fully trained member of a firefighting crew engaged in the protection of life and property. Responds to alarms and combats fire in an industrial setting requiring the full performance of a firefighting tasks involving structures, equipment, and facilities.
