Position Summary:

Our client is seeking a highly experienced and proactive Associate General Counsel - Construction & Development to join its legal team. This role will provide legal support across all phases of real estate development, with a particular emphasis on construction contracts, risk management, and regulatory compliance. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in construction law, real estate transactions, and development-related legal matters.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal counsel on construction-related matters including contract negotiation, project delivery methods, and dispute resolution.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of agreements including construction contracts (AIA and custom), development agreements, design and engineering contracts, and service agreements.
  • Advise internal stakeholders on zoning, permitting, environmental compliance, and land use issues.
  • Support project teams in managing legal risks throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Collaborate with external counsel, consultants, and government agencies as needed.
  • Assist in handling claims, litigation, and alternative dispute resolution related to construction and development.
  • Monitor changes in construction and real estate law and ensure organizational compliance.
  • Provide training and guidance to project managers and development teams on legal best practices.

Qualifications:

  • J.D. from an accredited law school and admission to the state bar (Tennesse preferred).
  • Minimum of 3+ years of legal experience with a focus on construction law, real estate development, or related practice areas.
  • In-depth knowledge of construction law, including AIA contracts, lien laws, insurance, and risk management.
  • Experience working in-house at a real estate development firm or with clients in the construction industry is highly desirable.
  • Strong negotiation, drafting, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a practical, business-oriented approach
