Announcement #2025-190 Issue Date: 06-24-25 Closing Date: 07-16-25 Archaeologist II Cultural Resources Department of Cultural Division Hourly Wage: $24.44-$27.51/Regular/Full-Time Archaeologist II assists the Program Manager in execution of the mission and mandate of the Program, works under guidance of senior archaeological and cultural staff to achieve this. In doing so, the Archaeologist II is responsible for conducting cultural resource investigations and consultation review in accordance with established law. Work involves the use of contemporary methodology and theory to provide protection for archeological and cultural resources including Traditional Cultural Properties. The Archaeologist II utilizes skills and knowledge for the enhancement of the living culture. Archaeologist II assists in the design of field methodology, implementation of fieldwork, and completion of reports, assuring their compliance with applicable state and federal laws, as well as tribal laws and policies. Archaeologist II will conduct field survey for archaeological and cultural investigations and/or monitoring during project implementation. Archaeologist II may assist in contract documents and budgets pertaining to archaeological/cultural resources projects. Archaeologist II additional duties includes consultation responses to local, state, federal, and tribal correspondence; and attendance at meetings with private, state, federal, and tribal entities.
Examples of Work Performed: Coordinates with city, county, state, and federal agencies regarding cultural resources issues, including but not limited to compliance with Executive Order 05-05, Washington State Environmental Protection Act, National Environmental Protection Act, and the National Historic Preservation Act.
Assists in initiating and preparing contract documents, budgets, and scopes of work for outside agencies.
Conduct cultural resource inventories by compiling and examining existing institutional databases; professional literature; historical and archival literature; and oral history interviews.
Conduct cultural resources projects including archeological surveys, traditional cultural property studies, and oral history projects. Assist in the: coordination of staff, project proponents, land managers and landowners; assessment of equipment needs; preparation of project research design and methodology.
Conducts archaeological survey and field work as needed, operate GPS in-field, draft survey reports that meet or exceed state and federal cultural resources reporting standards, create maps utilizing GIS software.
Provide written responses to correspondence from outside agencies and coordinate with various Yakama Nation programs.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of contemporary archeological methods and theories, especially as related to the Columbia Basin.
Knowledge of governing state, federal, and tribal laws and polices related to cultural resource management.
Knowledge of the state, federal and tribal laws that govern Traditional Cultural Properties.
Familiarity regarding the evaluation of sites under the National Historic Preservation Act, National Register of Historic Places Guidelines.
Ability to conduct oral interviews for the purposes of oral history projects and documentation of Traditional Cultural Properties. Understanding of behavior or language that may be considered culturally insensitive.
Working knowledge of the geography of the Yakama Reservation, Ceded Lands and Columbia River Basin.
Ability to organize and coordinate simultaneous complex and difficult projects. Knowledge and experience in formulating research design, conducting survey, and documenting findings.
Understanding of basic GIS applications, mapping, and utilization of GPS in field.
Skill in multitasking and working with interruptions, responding to phone inquiries, coordination with outside agencies.
Ability to identify project affect and provide management recommendations to tribal, and state/federal government agencies; recommendations for cultural resource treatment/protections.
Minimum Requirements: Education and/or Experience: Bachelor's degree in archaeology or related field with greater than 5 years experience of full-time archeological experience
OR actively pursuing higher graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent degree with combined field experience
OR have a combination of graduate level education and archaeological experience that together meets the qualification indicators.
Candidate should have a minimum of 1-year specialized experience in field survey.
Familiarity with Yakama Nation Reservation and Ceded Lands.
Knowledge of state and federal law governing cultural resources.
Must be in good professional standing with the Washington State Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation, having no previous violations of federal or state archaeological and cultural resources laws.
Must be physically fit and capable of walking and working in tough terrain under adverse conditions.
Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License with the ability to obtain a Yakama Nation Driving permit.
Required to pass a pre-employment drug test.
